USA Weightlifting 2015 National Juniors Joins OKC’s Bart & Nadia Sports Festival Press Release
In 2015, USA Weightlifting’s National Junior Championships will head to Oklahoma City as part of the Bart & Nadia Sports Experience. The event will take place February 12-15 in a joint venture between the Bart & Nadia Sports Experience, USA Weightlifting, the Oklahoma Weightlifting LWC and the Oklahoma City CVB.
Hosted at the Cox Convention Center, more than 200 of the best weightlifting athletes younger than age 20 in the nation will seek spots on Team USA’s Junior World Championship and Youth World Championship teams.
Olympic gold medalists Bart Conner and Nadia Comaneci run the Bart & Nadia Sports Experience, which brings more than 10,000 people through the doors of the Cox Convention Center every year for a range of sporting activities, including the Nadia Comaneci International Invitational gymnastics meet. The event also brings in children from families around the Oklahoma City metro area to try Olympic sports, and it will include weightlifting in this group for the first time in 2015.
The event additionally involves a large health and wellness expo and youth and junior sports activities, with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Oklahoma Energy FC, Oklahoma City Barons, University of Central Oklahoma, Schlegal Bicycles, U.S. Tennis Association, Homeland Stores Boxing Challenge, the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy and the Oklahoma City Redhawks partnering to host the event.
“From the beginning, our goal was to bring together like-minded sports, fitness and wellness activities in order to create a fun and inspiring event for families. We are honored that USA Weightlifting has chosen to bring one of its prestigious competitions to OKC in conjunction with our 2015 Bart & Nadia Sports Experience,” three-time Olympian Bart Conner said.
"A National Championship in Oklahoma City is hugely exciting and partnering with the Bart and Nadia Sports Experience amplifies the entire experience. They've created something really unique here - a youth sports village - and we're thrilled to showcase the nation's best young weightlifters on such a dynamic stage. The atmosphere is going to be electric." Oklahoma Weightlifting President Jeremy Routledge said.
“We are excited to partner with Bart Conner to join this increasingly successful annual event. The ability to partner with another Olympic sport and open the opportunity for young gymnasts to be exposed to our sport, in turn exposing our elite youth to their sport, should provide an excellent weekend of competition for weightlifting’s finest young competitors,” USA Weightlifting Director of Events & Programs Phil Andrews added.
