About Snow Volleyball

Snow volleyball is a three-player variant of beach volleyball played in snowy conditions. Teams are allowed one reserve player and two substitutions per set, and each match is best of three 15-point sets. Additionally, a touch off the block is not counted as one of a team’s three touches.

Since developing in Austria in 2008, the sport has since grown across Europe and in the Americas. In 2015, the European Volleyball Confederation adopted the sport and created a tour and continental championship in subsequent years. Snow volleyball was showcased as a demonstration sport at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, and the inaugural FIVB Snow Volleyball World Tour began in March 2019. The FIVB aims to offer a World Championship in the sport in 2021 and to have snow volleyball included in the Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games, Fourth CISM World Winter Games in 2021, and 30th Winter Universiade in 2021.

Ultimately, FIVB and USA Volleyball is pushing for snow volleyball to become a medal sport at the Olympic Winter Games, which would make volleyball the first sport to be offered in both the Summer and Winter Games.
