Certifications Available

There are several levels of certifications available for USA Volleyball officials in all disciplines of the sport.

Levels of Certification

Junior Second Referee

Minimum Standards for Junior Second Referee at National Events
  • No use of electronic devices during the match
  • No food or drink ON the scoring table
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the following:
    • Brings own whistle.
    • Whistle – loud, crisp, timely.
    • Correctly checks line-ups prior to each set.
    • Observes receiving team during service action.
    • Transitions to blocking side of net during rallies (when possible).
    • Repeats first referee’s signals; uses proper signals and sequence for R2 calls.
    • Maintains focus at net during net play (does not follow ball).
    • Identifies center line, net faults and touches above the net.
    • Follows substitution procedures & communicates sub info with scorer.
    • Administers time-outs.
    • Assists with communication among officiating crew.

Junior Scorer

Minimum Standards for Junior Scorers at National Events
  • No use of electronic devices during the match
  • No food or drink ON the scoring table
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the following:
    • Correctly records:
      1. Results of coin toss (serving and receiving team information).
      2. Starting line-ups.
    • Confirms the correct server.
    • Slashes running score column points.
    • Enters exit scores.
    • Substitutions.
      1. Slashes player number exiting set and enters player number entering set.
      2. Slashes the total team sub count.
    • Records time outs.
    • At the end of the set:
      1. Enters and circles final exit scores.
      2. Correctly enters winning and losing teams & scores in results section.
