U.S. Girls' Youth Team Falls to Russia

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 10, 2015) - The U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team lost a tough five-set battle to Russia 23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 15-10 in a battle of undefeated teams in the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship on Monday in Lima, Peru.

The U.S., which is now 2-1 in pool play while Russia is now one of three undefeated teams in the 20-team World Championship, rounds out pool play on Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET against Belgium (2-1, 6 points) its fourth Pool C match. Despite the loss, Team USA has qualified for the Eight Finals Round involving the top 16 teams in the tournament with the playoffs starting on Aug. 13. The eight winners will advance to the quarterfinal round in the gold-medal bracket, while the losers fall into the 9-16 Classification bracket.

Outside hitter Khalia Lanier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the team with a match-high 18 points via 16 kills on 40 swings and two blocks. Middle blocker Regan Pittman (Spring Hill, Kan.) and opposite Kathryn Plummer (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) pocketed 16 points each via 12 kills, two blocks and two aces. Middle blocker Ronika Stone (San Jose, Calif.) also had 16 points via 12 kills, three blocks and one ace.

Outside hitter Lexi Sun (Encinitas, Calif.) posted 11 points via seven kills, one block and three aces. Setter Sydney Hilley (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the defensive front for Team USA with four blocks and added two kills for six points.

Libero Tiffany Clark (Naperville, Ill.) handled 15 digs and 12 excellent receptions on 34 chances, all team highs.

The U.S. converted 39.9 percent of its attacks with a .216 hitting efficiency (61-28-153) as Hilley was credited with 35 running sets on 111 set attempts. The Americans held an 8-5 advantage in aces. Team USA managed a 61-50 margin in kills. Team USA’s defense held Russia to a 32.7 kill percent and .156 hitting efficiency (50-26-153). Russia took advantage of 45 American errors (28 attack errors, 10 service errors, 7 serve receive errors) during the match. In contrast, Russia had 38 errors (26 attack, 4, service, 8 reception).
