Italy remains undefeated, beats Girls' Youth Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 25, 2017) – Italy defeated the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team in three sets, 25-7, 25-16, 25-15 in the quarterfinals of the FIVB Girls’ U18 World Championship in Rosario, Argentina.

Italy (6-0) advances to the semifinals tomorrow against the winner of the Germany and Turkey match. The U.S. (3-3) will face the loser of that match in the 5th-8th place bracket Saturday at 1p ET.

The Italians held an advantage in blocks (11-2), aces (14-1) and opponent errors (22-10). The U.S. had difficulty today passing and receiving serves. Italy had five aces in the first set and seven in the third. Outside hitter Madi Kubik led the U.S. offensive attack with 10 points, 10 kills on 28 attempts. Opposite Mica Allison and outside Logan Eggleston chipped in five points each.

In 2013, the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team made history, becoming the first U.S. volleyball team of either gender to win a world championship medal at the youth or junior level, taking the silver after losing to China in the final in Thailand. In 2015, the U.S. earned another silver in the World Championship final against Italy.

The U.S., ranked No. 1 in the world, competed in Pool B along with Russia, the 2017 European U18 champions; Brazil, the 2017 South American champions, plus, Belarus and Mexico.
