2018-2019 FIVB and USAV Beach High Performance Age Group Definitions

USA Volleyball High Performance age-group classifications are consistent with those established by the FIVB (Federation Internationale de Volleyball). Those age-group classifications govern international competition and all levels of High Performance programs. Please note that these age-group classifications differ from USA Volleyball junior club age definitions and also from grade classifications of U.S. school systems.

High Performance works on an annual cycle, with a cycle starting on Jan. 1 and ending on Dec. 31 of each year. Based on birth year, athletes either remain or age up into the next oldest FIVB age group each year. Athletes may only try out and play in their own age group – there is no “playing up.”

The annual cycle matches the international competition schedule in which USA competes. Placing athletes by birth year in their current FIVB Age Group maintains the opportunity for the correct pool of athletes to participate in age group competitions each year, either at NORCECA or World Championship competitions. National Teams will alternate international competition opportunities each year in accordance with offerings by NORCECA and the FIVB World Championship.
