COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 27, 2014) – Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.), a setter on the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team, and beach partners April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) have been named finalists for the Women’s Sports Foundation’s 2014 Sportswoman of the Year.
Glass, the 2013 USA Volleyball Indoor Female Athlete of the Year, was named Best Setter during the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix and the 2013 NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship, which led to a gold medal in Omaha, Neb. She helped Team USA earn the silver medal at the 2013 season-ending FIVB World Grand Champions Cup as she was the second Best Setter in the event. During 2014, Glass helped the U.S. defeat top-ranked Brazil four times in the USA Volleyball Cup.
Walsh Jennings and Ross are the only team nominated to be Sportswoman of the Year. The pair started playing together full time in September of 2013 and opened their partnership by winning the AVP Tour event in Santa Barbara and finishing third in Huntington Beach.
They won the 2013 FIVB Grand Slams in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Xiamen China. In 2014, they have won three FIVB Grand Slams and one Open event. They have also won all four AVP Tour events. They have an AVP winning streak of 19 matches.
When Walsh Jennings and Ross won the FIVB Xiamen Grand Slam on Oct. 27, 2013, Walsh Jennings set the all-time record for tournament victories by a women’s beach player with 113. Prior to Xiamen, she had been tied with Misty May-Treanor at 112.
The public will have input into who is chosen the winner. The winners will be determined by a combination of the public vote (50 percent) and the Women’s Sports Foundation’s Awards Committee’s vote (50 percent). The winners will be the two athletes – one individual finalist and one team finalist – who receive the highest combined share of the public vote and the Awards Committee’s vote.
