As an athlete, one will constantly face adversity in sport. Adversity comes in many different forms, be it struggling through a hard workout, facing injury and returning to competition afterwards, or any other number of ways. Most forms of adversity in athletics are are self-inflicted and controlled by the athlete; suffering during a workout, soreness after a workout, and extreme fatigue from tough training. However, some forms of adversity are completely out of an athlete’s control.
It’s not everyday that you get a break from triathlon training. Those days are rare and coveted. On those days, I generally try to catch up on sleep or do normal person errands that I’ve neglected for the past week or so. This was neither of those types of days last Thursday in Geelong, Victoria.
I had been thinking about the Tritonman EDR essentially since I crossed the finish line of the Detroit EDR in August. Throughout all the hard and easy workouts this fall and winter, I had at least one eye looking toward this race.
