FULL RECAP AND RESULTS: Colorado Wins Eighth Straight Team Title at 2017 USA Triathlon Collegiate Club National Championships

Statement from USA Triathlon Regarding Incorrect Results at Collegiate Club National Championships
We regret to share that, during the awards ceremony of the 2017 USA Triathlon Collegiate Club National Championships on April 22 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the overall team standings, women’s team standings, as well as the standings for the individual men’s combined and women’s combined category were incorrect.
The University of Colorado’s score from Friday’s draft-legal race was not included in the team’s point total. Once corrected, Colorado was named the overall and women’s team champion, instead of the U.S. Naval Academy, which was recognized as winning both divisions at the ceremony. Navy still earned the men’s team title, as originally announced. Also, the individual men’s and women’s combined standings were incorrect due to a miscommunication and, while the error did not result in a change to the title winners, it did affect other podium positions.
USA Triathlon sincerely apologizes to Navy and Colorado, as well as the impacted individual combined athletes, for these significant oversights. We also extend our deep regrets to all athletes, coaches, families and team supporters at the USA Triathlon Collegiate Club National Championships. We are currently re-evaluating our processes, and identifying steps to ensure that these errors never happen again.
2017 Event Recap
The 2017 USA Triathlon Collegiate Club National Championships kicked off on Friday morning, with the University of Colorado’s Dan Feeney and Erica Hawley earning wins in the draft-legal races. Feeney covered the 750m swim, 20.2k bike, and 5k run course in 57:07. In the women's race, Hawley covered the same course in 1:09:03. The second annual High School National Championship followed on Friday afternoon with wins by Andrew Shellenberger and Audrey Ernst. Shellenberger (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished the non-draft sprint course in 1:02:35 while Ernst (South Elign, Ill.) finished in 1:10:53, nearly a minute ahead of her nearest competitor.
Saturday led off with the non-drafting Olympic-Distance National Championships. Nick Noone of the University of Colorado and Cecilia Davis-Hayes of Columbia University won individual Olympic-distance national titles to begin the day in Tuscaloosa. Noone finished the 1500m swim, 40k bike, and 9.8k run in 1:55:11 while Davis-Hayes topped the women's championship in 2:11:19. The mixed-team relay was set to finish the exciting weekend of events in Tuscaloosa, but was halted after the bike leg of the second wave of athletes due to severe weather in the area. The top five teams at the time the race was halted will receive awards.
In the team competition, The University of Colorado earned its eighth consecutive overall team title. Colorado also earned the women’s team title, and the U.S. Naval Academy took home the men’s team title. Full event recaps can be found in the following links:
