Start Your Legacy July 20, 2019 in Long Beach

USA Triathlon is proud to unveil the Legacy Triathlon, a non-draft sprint-distance race, inclusive of Physically Challenged (PC) Open athletes, that will be held annually beginning July 20, 2019 in Long Beach — proposed site of the triathlon competitions at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In its inaugural year, the Legacy Triathlon will feature a non-draft sprint-distance course (750-meter swim, 18.9-kilometer bike, 5.1-kilometer run) and will be open to 750 age-group and PC Open athletes. A three-person relay option is also available. Registration is now open, and no qualification is required!

The long-term vision is to build this event into a multi-day festival that includes both age-group and elite racing — starting as an International Triathlon Union (ITU) Triathlon World Cup and ultimately becoming a stop of the ITU World Triathlon Series, the highest level of elite ITU racing.

As the Legacy Triathlon grows, USA Triathlon plans to add components such as open-water swimming and running races (and possibly other summer Olympic sports like beach volleyball), community outreach activities, youth-focused events and live entertainment.

Waitlist for Age Group Sprint

The Legacy Triathlon Age Group Sprint is SOLD OUT! Athletes wishing to add themselves to the waitlist may do so through the registration link. Athletes on the waitlist are NOT registered until you receive confirmation directly from USA Triathlon. There is no fee to join the waitlist.

All other race divisions are currently open for registration: Paratriathlon Nationals, PC Open, Challenged Team, Relay and Open Water Swim.

Charity Spots Available for Age Group Sprint

A limited number of charity spots are now available for the Age Group Sprint. Athletes may register through the registration link until all spots are filled. The same $129 entry fee is required, plus a $100 donation to the USA Triathlon Foundation. This is the only guaranteed way to enter the 2019 Legacy Triathlon. Athletes not wishing to utilize this method may still add themselves to the waitlist (above) and will be contacted as spots become open.

Cancellation 50% Refund for Currently Registered Athletes

Are you currently registered for the Legacy Age Group Sprint and can no longer attend? In an effort to create additional race spots, USA Triathlon is offering a 50% refund on registration costs so your spot can be opened up for somebody else. Please email registration@usatriathlon.org with "Legacy Cancellation" in the subject line stating that you wish to cancel your spot and receive the 50% refund. You will only receive a refund provided that we are able to fill your spot with an athlete from the waitlist. Refunds will be completed on a first-come, first-serve basis based on when USA Triathlon receives the request.

Note that if you purchased registration insurance from Booking Protect during your original registration process, please still let USA Triathlon know that you are planning to cancel. However, Booking Protect will provide your full refund.

Celebrating Southern California's Rich Olympic History

The Legacy Triathlon will enable USA Triathlon to contribute to Southern California’s Olympic lore and rich triathlon history by giving back to the local multisport community. USA Triathlon is the first National Governing Body to bring a new annual event to the Los Angeles footprint as part of the lead-up to 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our mission is to start building our legacy before, rather than after, the Games — starting at the grassroots level, and over time becoming a prestigious international event featuring elite and age-group athletes, as well as paratriathletes, from around the world.

To give back to the local multisport community and fulfill its mission of opening pathways to triathlon for all, the USA Triathlon Foundation has committed a total of $100,000 in funding — $10,000 per year through 2028 — to support local community initiatives in conjunction with the Legacy Triathlon.
