Project Podium

Project Podium is a USA Triathlon men’s elite development program based at Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe, Arizona. This program is designed to further develop top young male USA Triathlon Elite athletes with the goal of helping them achieve medal performances in the Olympic Games.

The program enables college-aged triathletes with elite competitive potential to train in a daily high-performance environment while earning an undergraduate degree at ASU through its esteemed online program or on the Tempe residential campus. Athletes may be eligible to receive scholarships and support from USA Triathlon based on meeting performance standards and other objective and discretionary measures as developed by the USA Triathlon High Performance staff.

Program participants will have access to the ASU Sun Devils’ athletic facilities, including the aquatic facility, weight room and outdoor track for regular training sessions. Sun Devil Athletics will provide the squad with sports medicine resources, strength and conditioning services, nutrition counseling, and academic support services.

The target demographic for this program recruits are male athletes under 25 years of age who possess significant competitive potential, are skilled and experienced in the sport of triathlon, and are committed to the draft-legal format of racing.
The squad is optimally composed of 6-12 athletes with the core being college prospects, and some additional spots available to established elite triathletes who are also committed to the draft-legal Olympic-distance format.

Qualification

The ideal collegiate male candidate will have competed for multiple years in the USAT Junior Elite Series, earning podiums at that level, earning qualification to the Junior World Championships, and have competition experience at the Continental Cup level of International Triathlon Union (ITU). While USA Triathlon will use performance and single-sport benchmarks to help identify incoming talent, qualification for, and continued support associated with, Project Podium is a fully discretionary process.  The process includes, but is not limited to, consideration of athlete performances to date, rate of progression, data analytics, squad contribution analysis, and overall professionalism.
