ITU Rule 2.4 Pre-Participation Exam (PPE)

USAT PPE Certification Form - Year 1 with ECG
USAT PPE Certification Form - Year 2 without ECG
ITU Medical Questionnaire

Junior athletes (ages 16-19) who wish to compete in an ITU International Event (e.g. CAMTRI or ETU Junior Cups, CAMTRI Junior Championships, ITU World Championships, ITU Continental Cups, etc.) are required to undergo a Pre-Participation Exam (PPE) by their personal health care provider. The details of this are outlined in Rule 2.4 and Appendix Q of the ITU Competition Rules. The PPE includes completion an ITU-provided Medical Questionnaire reviewed by the athlete's doctor, an examination, and a 12 lead resting electrocardiogram (ECG) with results reviewed by the athlete's doctor. Upon completion of the PPE, the athlete will certify to USAT satisfactory completion using the form linked above. The athlete does not send his/her medical documentation to USAT.  Athletes completing the PPE for the first time will use the Year 1 form with ECG.  The following year, when the ECG is not required, athletes will submit the Year 2 form updating the date of their most recent physical exam.  Certifications should be sent to juniors@usatriathlon.org.

Draft-Legal Race Calendar

Teenage athletes who aspire to national and international-level competition must develop the speed and skill for success in the draft-legal format. USA Triathlon coordinates a series of draft-legal racing opportunities for this purpose. While not every teenage athlete aspires to race as an elite, developing the skills associated with draft-legal triathlon at an early age — a strong swim, superior bike handling, quick transitions, and the ability to run fast off the bike — will serve all athletes well as they progress as collegiate and age group competitors.

USAT Junior Elite Series

The USAT Junior Elite Series consists of the four Youth Elite Cups and the four Junior Elite Cups plus the USAT Youth Elite and Junior Elite National Championship.  Each of the "Cups" serves as a qualifier for Nationals. Series events are scheduled to take place approximately three to six weeks apart and are spread across the three geographic zones...East, West and Central. Athletes may compete in any and all qualifiers - regardless of where they reside.  Athletes score points at each event to determine a Series Champion and towards seasonal draft-legal rankings.

How to Register

Registration is handled directly with the event organizer of each Youth Elite/Junior Elite Cup, which are independently owned and operated events sanctioned by USA Triathlon. Entry fees, late fees, and reimbursements are at the sole discretion of the event organizer and all fees are paid directly to the event organizer, not USA Triathlon. When events reach field size capacity (usually 75 athletes in a division) the event organizer will keep a wait list. If and when spots become available, the event organizer will contact the athletes in chronological order. To register, use the website links below to access the registration page for the event.

USAT Junior Elite Cups

Junior Elite Cups are draft-legal sprint distance triathlons open to athletes 16 to 19 years old. Junior Elite Cups are the most competitive junior triathlons in the United States. The competition distances are 750 meter swim, 20 kilometer (4x5k laps) bike, and 5k (2x2.5k lap) run. These events serve as qualifiers for the Junior Elite National Championships, contested at the same distances, and provide the pathway into international competition. Juniors looking for additional draft-legal racing opportunities may consider entering an Elite Development Race (EDR) or a Youth Age Group Draft-Legal Triathlon (listed below).
