Lisa Dunn And Michelle Mensing To Lead USA Beach Handball Women's Program

March 09, 2020, 6 a.m. (ET)

USA Team Handball today announced the appointment of Lisa Dunn and Michi Mensing as head and assistant coach of the U.S. women’s beach handball team, effective immediately.

“I am thrilled to have Lisa and Michi leading our women’s program as we continue to watch the sport of beach handball grow, both in the United States and abroad,” said USA Team Handball chief executive officer Barry Siff.

“Our women’s team has already demonstrated its incredible potential in a short period of time, and I look forward to seeing what Team USA accomplishes with Lisa and Michi at the helm. I have no doubt that they will continue to build upon the successful program that Coach Juliano de Oliveira has established.”

The current head coach of Atlanta Beach Handball, Dunn previously served as assistant coach for the women’s beach program and most recently helped coach the team at the 2019 World Beach Games in Doha, Qatar.

Dunn made the transition from athlete to coach after the 2018 IHF Beach Handball World Championships in Kazan, Russia, after competing for Team USA at several international competitions and training with the National Team Residency Program in Auburn, Alabama.

“There is a lot of room in this sport for creativity and it is an honor to lead this quest to unlock the potential we have in the United States. I am also extremely fortunate to have Michi coaching by my side because she brings a wealth of knowledge, thoughtfulness and international experience to our program,” Dunn said. ““Our athletes are truly talented and I believe our strength will be our unconventional and complimentary athletic backgrounds. This gives us a unique set of skills that needs to be embraced and developed into our own style of play.”

Mensing, the women’s assistant coach during the world championships in Kazan, is a current board member of the San Francisco CalHeat Team Handball Club and a key leader of youth development programs in the Bay Area. She is also a founder of the U.S. Beach Handball Tour, a program designed to promote the sport of beach handball, recruit athletes for the elite player pool for USA Beach Handball and provide competition opportunities.

"I feel honored to serve once more as the assistant coach for our national team,” Mensing said. “We have an amazing group of athletes and I can't wait to prove to the world that the U.S. is able to compete at the highest level. Coach Juliano has laid the foundation for the program and Lisa and I are ready to take it to the next level.”

The women will compete next at the IHF Beach Handball World Championships in Pescara, Italy this summer. Both U.S. beach handball teams punched their ticket to Pescara by striking gold at the NORCA Beach Championships last July in Trinidad & Tobago.
