Chicago Inter: Ready to Make History
By: Patrick Jalabert and the Chicago Inter Handball Club

Chicago handball began in 1991. From its inception until the year 2006, there was only one men’s team. However, in October of 2006 the club started building a woman’s team. The following year, the club was officially registered as Chicago Inter Handball Club INC, a non-profit organization under code 501(c) (3). Currently, it is one of the oldest, largest and most successful handball clubs in the United States, and it is the premier handball club in Chicago.

Since its origin, the club has been the home of players from countries all around the world including: Germany, France, Norway, Poland, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Bosnia, Serbia, Romania, Denmark, Japan, Croatia, Spain, Morocco, and the United States. The club takes pride in representing all of these nationalities through the love of this shared sport.

Chicago has been attending the USA Team Handball National Championships since the year 2006 and has been very successful:

In terms of the 2014-15 season and preparing for the 2015 USATH Open Championships, Chicago hosted its second Beach Handball Tournament in June 2014 where teams from across United States, Poland, and Germany participated. The club also hosted its annual Michael Lipov Memorial Cup in October 2014 where the Men’s Team finished first.

In addition, the Men’s Team: participated in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Classic where they finished first; competed in the California Cup (Fremont, Calif.) where they brought home the gold; participated in the Scott Pace Memorial Tournament (West Point, N.Y.) where they placed third; and traveled to the Minnesota Classic where they finished second. These accomplishments are in addition to practicing twice per week at the great facility at Northeastern Illinois University.

The best performance in Chicago Handball Club history was in 2007, when three teams from the club participated in the National Championships. The Women’s Team won first, the first Men's Team placed 3rd in the Elite Division, and the second Men's Team captured the Open Division gold.

The club is looking to create new history this year as they will once again bring three teams to the national tournament.

It takes “competitiveness, joy, success, strength, unity, teammate, friendship, love, laughter, respect, tears, belief, pain, injuries, disappointment. and hard work” to win a National championship, and the teams of Chicago Inter Handball Club are excited to embark on this emotional, yet fun journey at the 2015 Open Championships tournament in York, Pa.
