Q: How do I know if I should register as an Athlete, Coach, or Referee member?

A: You will need to register as an athlete to compete at any USA Taekwondo sanctioned event.  You will need to register as a coach to coach at any USA Taekwondo sanctioned event.  You can only register as a referee if you are a USAT certified referee.  You can sign up as multiple memberships (i.e. athlete and coach) for no additional charge to your membership.

Q: Do I need to complete a background check?
A: Anyone who is a coach, referee, or instructor and/or club owner over the age of 18 must complete a background check. 

Q: Can I complete my background check over the phone or by mail?
A: No, you must complete the background check online through Verified Volunteers.

Q: What if I have taken a background check through another company?  Can I use my previous background check for my USA Taekwondo background check?
A: USA Taekwondo mandates that you go through your USA Taekwondo membership profile on Hang-a-Star and take a background check through Verified Volunteers.

Q: How do I complete my background check?
A: You can complete your background check through your online membership account.  Log in to your membership profile through Hang-a-Star.  Under your membership tab, click the link [complete background check now]

Q: How long does my background check take to complete?
A: The background check can take as quickly as one business day or up to 2 business weeks.

Q: What if I am a coach, referee or instructor and/or club owner and I do not complete my background check?
A: If you do not complete your background check you will not be able to renew your membership, renew your club, register for or participate in any USAT event or seminar, and you will not receive referee or coach certification upgrades.

Q: How long is my background check valid?
A: Your background check is valid for two years from the date it is completed.

Q: How long does it take for me to receive my membership card?
A: Normal processing time is four to six weeks. If you register on-line you are registered instantly and can print a confirmation sheet of your membership. It will still take four to six weeks to receive your membership card.

Q: What do I do if I do not receive my membership card in the 4-6 weeks timeframe?
A: Please contact the USAT membership office and we will check to see if your card has been returned for insufficient or incorrect address.  We can also verify when it has been mailed to you. You can contact the membership office at (719) 866-3622 or email membership services at membership@usa-taekwondo.us.

Q: How do I file for an insurance claim if I am injured?
A: Call or email the USAT membership office for a claim form and instructions to complete the claim form. Upon verification of membership and approval from USAT, you will receive a claim which you can send directly to the USAT insurance company.  

Q: What is the fastest way to renew or sign up for USAT membership?
A: The fastest way to renew your membership is to register on-line through USA Taekwondo’s on-line membership system. Once you register on-line you receive an instant confirmation.

Q: What do I do if I lose my membership card?
A: Email or call the USAT Membership office. There is a $10 replacement card fee. This fee will need to be paid in advance for the new card.

Q: I am listed under the wrong club, how do I correct this?
A: If you are listed under the incorrect club on your application, then you will need to submit your change in writing to the USAT Membership Department. Only the individual member or the member’s legal guardian can request to change club affiliation.

Q: Can I register by phone for membership?
A: No. You must either register on-line or submit an application by fax or mail. To renew online click HERE

Q: How do I upgrade my membership from Support to Athlete, Coach, or Referee member?
A: Contact the USAT membership department to request an upgrade. After the Membership Manager has verified your account information, you must submit the application to the Membership Manager to receive your upgraded account.

Q: What do I do if I already registered my entire family with USAT and did not receive the Family Membership discount?
A: Contact the USAT membership office to receive a refund. You will need to send the names and membership numbers of the family members.

Q: What can I change on my membership profile by myself?
A: On your online membership profile, you can change your address, phone number, instructor's name, and whether you would like to be on the USA Taekwondo mailing list.

USA Taekwondo Club Membership Questions

Q: How do I get the Club Liability Insurance?
A: Your club must have at least 35 Athlete, Coach or Referee members to be eligible. If you elected to receive club insurance and your club has reached the 35 member mark, the USAT membership department will receive notification and an insurance certificate will be issued.  Once the insurance certificate is issued, it will be emailed to the club representative.

Q: What do I do if there are members missing from my club member list?
A: The individual member will need to submit a letter or email to the USAT membership department to change their club affiliation.

Q: What do I do if my club's address changes?
A: You can log on to the USAT website and change it yourself or will need to submit, in writing, to the USAT Membership department your change of address. Only the Club Representative listed on the application will be able to submit this change.
