Top Seeds Maintain Form to Take Honors in Women’s Singles and Open Doubles
There were few surprises in the Women’s Single event at the 2014 Butterfly Los Angeles Open, as the top two seeds in every round robin group advanced to the main draw. In the quarter finals, Diane Dongye Chen (2355) caused a small upset by beating Satoko Hayashi (2377), to put her through to the semi-finals. In the next round, Diane who plays a penhold pick-hitting style, could not continue her momentum and fell to top seed Liying Tang (2574) in straight games. Second seeded Bo Wang (2496), who currently plays in the Seattle area, duly won her semi-final in straight games over Shuang Wang (2418). In the final, Wang always got an early start, but continue to fall to Tang’s ability to counterloop big shots from mid-distance. Wang led 8-4 in the first game, before losing 11-8. That setback seemed to impact Wang’s mentality, as Tang went on to win the match 3-1, and take home the $1,500 prize money.
The Open Doubles event went as seeded until the semi-final when the ICC team of Timothy Wang and Zihong Huang (5217) took out second seeded Jeff Huang and Tao Wenzhang (5325). On the other side of the draw, the other ICC team of Yonghui Liang and Dan Liu (5265) caused a second upset by defeating Xiang Jing Zhang and Seung Hwan Kim (5366). In the final, the teams split the first two games, and were tied at 9-9 in the 3rd game before two uncharacteristic errors by Timothy Wang and Zihong Huang put them down 1-2 in games. They struggled to maintain form, and conceded the 4th game 11-6. Yonghui Liang and Dan Liu will take home the $1,000 prize and the title of Open Doubles Champion.
