California-Based Chinese Players Pose Stiff Competition to Top Seeds at 2014 Butterfly Los Angeles Open
In just a few days, over 300 players will descend from across the country and the world to compete in the 2014 Butterfly Los Angeles Open (8/16-8/17). The top two players for the highly anticipated Open Singles event are well known and respected international players, Chih-Yuan Chuang (WR #7, 2012 London Olympic Men’s Singles Semifinalist) from Taiwan and Eugene Wang (WR #63, often considered the top player in North America) from Canada. Both have years of experience competing in international events, and are looking to take home the $10,000 grand prize. However, a legion of young, energetic California-based Chinese player/coaches are poised and ready to steal away the prize.
Third seed and 2014 US Open Champion, Wenzhang Tao (2773) and fourth seed Bob Chen (2735) both originally played for the Shandong Luneng team in China before coming to the States to compete and coach at various clubs in California and across the U.S. Tao, relatively unknown, took out many formidable opponents at the 2014 U.S. Open including favorite Jin Ueda (2780) from Japan to take home the coveted title. He will be looking to repeat his outstanding performance from the US Open at the 2014 Butterfly Los Angeles Open.
Many players from well-known clubs in the Northern California Bay Area will also be vying for top honors this weekend, including full-time ICC player/coaches Dan Liu (2585), Zihong Huang (2595), and Yonghui Liang (2680) and 2010, 2012, and 2013 US National Men’s Singles Champion Timothy Wang (2622), the top seeded American player in the event.
