Hallowell Named USA Softball Player of the Week

    Feb. 14, 2006

USA Softball Player of the Week:
     Week of February 6 - February 12

    Alicia Hallowell
    University of Arizona

Hallowell Named USA Softball Player of the Week
    2/14/2006

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The University of Arizona's Alicia Hollowell pitched her way to the first USA Softball Player of the Week honor for the 2006 season for the week of Feb. 6-12, announced today by the Amateur Softball Association and USA Softball.  Hollowell (Suisun, Calif.) became the Wildcat all-time leader in innings pitched with 887.2, surpassing former Wildcat Jennie Finch's 876.2.

She was almost perfect this weekend, not once but three times, leading the team to a 6-0 record at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.   In three games, the senior tossed 18.0 shutout innings.  In 57 batters faced, she combined to give up one hit, one walk and one hit-by-pitch.  Of those 57 batters, she logged 36 strikeouts and her batters combined to hit .018 against her, with a .053 on-base percentage.  During the weekend she also became the Wildcat all-time strikeout leader with 1,384, also passing Finch.

"It's an honor to get this award.  It was a good weekend for the team in general.  I had the team and some good defensive plays behind me," said Hallowell.  "It's easy to pitch against good teams such as Texas A&M when you have a good lead and good defensive plays.  It was nice to get off to a good start."

Hollowell's opponents were some of the best as she tossed no-hitters against No. 15 Northwestern and came back the next day to no-hit No. 6 Texas A&M.  The aforementioned performances were her 14th and 15th career no-hitters.  She was five outs away from being the first pitcher in the program's illustrious history to toss three consecutive no-hitters but came up just shy; tossing a one-hitter against a "receiving votes" Fullerton team.
