On Tuesday, May 5, 2009, John LoMonaco passed away unexpectedly at the age of 57. He collapsed, suffering a heart attack, in the locker room of the Spectrum Club in Canoga Park, minutes after winning his last game against Kevin Barlia. An avid player, John played three or four times a week and had many wins to his credit, including several NMRA medals and a 55-A Championship title in 2007 at the USA Racquetball National Singles in Houston, Texas. He lived in West Hills, California, where ran his own fire safety and inspection business.

In memory of John, an anonymous benefactor close to John established the John LoMonaco Grant, an all-expenses paid trip to the USA Racquetball National Singles Championships.

This year the National Singles Championship will be held at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona on May 24-28, 2017. Covered expenses will be: entry fee (two divisions), meals, five nights’ lodging at the host hotel, coach airfare, ground transportation, and a pass to the VIP tent in the Players’ Village. The recipient will submit receipts to USA Racquetball for personal reimbursement not to exceed $2,000. Companion costs will be at the expense of the recipient or his/her companion.

Those interested in applying for the grant should complete the John LoMonaco Grant Application, including a 500 word or less essay entitled, “Why I Want to Attend and Compete at the 2017 National Singles Championships,” and return it to USA Racquetball’s Barbara Pyle (bpyle@usaracquetball.com) no later than February 1, 2017. The essay and application become the property of USA Racquetball and will not be returned. Incomplete applications will be dismissed.
