2017 Junior World Karate Championships

October 22-30

USA Karate is proud to announce that our Junior National Team will participate in the World Karate Federation (WKF) Junior World Championships held in Tenerife, Spain, October 22-30, 2017. The Junior National team consists of the best athletes, ages 14-20, who will represent the United States in this prestigious international event.  

USA Karate will provide $10,000 in funding for the support of the Junior Athletes for thisChampionship. This funding will be used to offset the costs of registration, insurance, and travel costs for coaches, medical staff and team leads. The remaining costs will be distributed among the athletes in the administrative fee. 

TRAVEL DATES - Sunday, October 22 – Monday, October 30 

All athletes must arrive in Tenerife and be at the Team Hotel, La Laguna Gran Hotel no later than 4pm on Sunday, October 22. You may depart on Monday, October 30 after the competition ends. Competition begins on Wednesday October 25 and Continues through Sunday October 29.

ELIGIBLE ATHLETES

The top finisher in each Jr. Elite division will be offered first chance to be eligible to participate in Tenerife. Please notify us of your intent to participate by completing your survey with payment no later than Friday, September 8 5pm MST. If we do not hear from you by that date, your spot will be offered to the next athlete in your pool. 

SURVEY & ADMINISTRATIVE FEE

To confirm your spot each athlete will need to complete the athlete travel survey and pay the $750/athlete Administrative Fee and $1600 hotel fee (double occupancy). Both the survey and the fee are required for participation. Complete the survey by going to http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Karate/junior-national-team and clicking on the Jr. PKF image. 

Surveys and payment must be completed by Friday, September 8th. If your survey is not submitted by this date at 5pm MST, your spot will be offered to the next athlete in your team pool.

The World Karate Federation required that the rooms be booked by June 30 which is before our team trial. In an effort to provide our athletes rooms at the host hotel USA Karate has pre- booked rooms for our athletes and their chaperones. The federation has paid for these rooms up front; therefore if you chose not to stay at the team hotel you will be charged a $400.00 fee. Each double room will cost $800.00/per person for 8 nights - $1600.00. Currently, we only have enough rooms for athletes and a chaperone. Additional family members will have to go on a waiting list for rooms available after the athletes have confirmed.

Transportation

USA Karate will not book or provide airport transportation to and from the hotel. It is your responsibility to arrive at La Laguna Gran Hotel by 4 pm on Sunday, October 22nd. If for any reason your flight is delayed or you will be arriving late, it is imperative that you notify the team lead, not a friend or coach. 

USA Karate will provide transportation to and from the venue for all athletes and staff. The Organizing committee has not confirmed transport for chaperones who stay in the team hotel. Chaperones, please note that getting the athletes to the venue is always our priority and you may not ride on the team shuttles. 

Financial Responsibility

Being an elite athlete can be expensive and it is important to us that our athletes know the cost of an event such as this up front. 

The average cost for an athlete to attend this event is as follows: 

Hotel: 8 nights $1600.00 per double room

Administrative Fee: $750.00 

Total $2,350.00 per athlete and chaperone + AIRFARE 

Important Travel Information:

   - As a U.S. Citizen you do not need a Visa to enter Tenerife

   - As a U.S. Citizen you do not need proof of any vaccinations 

Local Travel Recommendations:

  • - Be aware of your surroundings, especially when traveling to tourist attractions or areas with large crowds of people.

    • -  Only carry the essentials with you and keep items such as cash, cards, and identification documents in your front pockets.

      • -  The Embassy recommends using only radio-dispatched taxis or car services as street cabs can be used as a front for local crime.
