The Larry Pugh Million Dollar Medal Match

A LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Seldom in life are we given the opportunity to shape Olympic history - to achieve an American first.

When Larry Pugh became the Chairman of US Biathlon he set the organization on a path to do just that. He saw medals won at every level from 17 year-olds at the Youth World Championships, to the World Cup, to the World Championships; at every level, that is, except the Olympic Games. Biathlon is the only winter sport in which the United States has never received an Olympic medal, and winning our first was Larry’s dream.

To honor Larry’s tremendous legacy, we have created the Larry Pugh Million Dollar Medal Match, an effort to ensure we give our top athletes everything they need to succeed at the next winter Olympics in 2018. To launch this ambitious two-year drive, a group of dedicated board members, together with the Harold Alfond Foundation have made commitments allowing US Biathlon to match every donation made in 2016 and 2017 - up to one million dollars - with a total target of $2 million.

Our athletes and coaches are dedicated to winning America’s first Olympic biathlon medal in a manner that reflects the values of the Olympic movement, brings honor to our nation and rewards the support and sacrifices of the families and communities that launched their Olympic journey.

And while we know that money alone cannot create success, combined with the passion and dedication of this team, it can help ensure that America's biathletes have access to the coaching, training, technology, medical testing and support required to compete with the world's top teams. It will also make it possible for us to give direct financial support to the athletes so they do not have to go into debt to pursue their Olympic dreams, a critical factor in a sport where the athletes don't reach their prime until their late 20s to mid 30s.

Larry Pugh’s second priority was the further development of US Biathlon’s next generation of Olympians through a world-class network of athlete development programs. This fund will support the coaches and staff doing this work and together we will use the Olympic ideals to motivate youth across the country, building a foundation to sustain competitive excellence for generations to come.

In the memory of Larry Pugh’s extraordinary leadership, and to support these inspiring Americans in their pioneering effort to make Olympic history, I ask you to consider supporting this two-year drive by making a gift before the end of 2016, and a pledge for 2017.

Please join me in helping our remarkable athletes make Olympic history and inspiring achievement in a new generation of Americans.

Sincerely,

Bill Burke
