COMMENTARY: Top 20 Teams
The Big Ten continues to flex its muscles in the latest poll with 4 out of the top 5 teams! Minnesota won an exciting dual between #1 and #2 over Iowa before a record crowd. Hats off to J Robinson and staff for their tremendous promotion “Border Brawl.” Coach Robinsoníss innovative approach will no doubt be duplicated in the future. It also didnítt hurt to have the nation’s two top rated squads going at it. Oklahoma State has found some of the consistency that eluded them earlier and is charging hard. Michigan and Ohio State have proven their ability to play in the deep end of the pool. Dangerous Oklahoma has used a variety of wrestlers but hasnítt lost any ground. Iowa State is peaking with several of their wrestlers scoring upsets over highly ranked opponents. The University of Pennsylvania of the EIWA/Ivy League has put together what may be their best season ever. West Virginia demonstrated tremendous balance in their weekend victory over Lock Haven. Another team able to utilize reserves liberally without missing a beat is Lehigh, who is on a year-end collision course with the Penn Quakers for Eastern Supremacy.

COMMENTARY: Top 20 Individuals
At 125, there are lots of “young guns”,, namely Purdue’s Chris Fleeger, Arizona State’s Mike Simpson and Cornell’s Travis Lee, looking to break through - this will be perhaps the most competitive weight this year at Nationals. Virginia Tech’s true frosh David Hoffman is having a strong year and is looking for an AA medal in March. Aaron Holker beat Eric Larkin again, but was inexplicably pinned by Missouri’s J.P. Reese. Tyrone Lewis reversed his low scoring bout with Joe Heskett with a big win. “The Two Gregs” from the East, Jones of West Virginia and Parker of Princeton are making noise; the EIWA #1 seed could be settled when Parker meets Penn’s Rick Springman in their much-anticipated dual. Another tremendously competitive weight is 184, where any number of men could win the NCAA title. Wonder if Cael Sanderson moving to 197 had anything to do with this? Speaking of Cael, he is closing in on his miracle run with the determination of steam rising from boiling water. Another true freshman, Chris Stretkowicz of Hofstra is now in the top 10. Heavyweight promises to be a battle royale, with true frosh Steve Mocco the favorite, but Penn’s Matt Feast continues to show dramatic improvement, he defeated Harvard’s highly-ranked Dawid Rechul last Friday, and will be a force in March.

Keep an eye on:
Army’s true freshman Phillip Simpson and Cal Poly’s Cedric Haymon both at 141. The Henson brothers at Penn are both having big years. Virginia Tech’s Scott Justus is in the thick of the 184 race, along with Wisconsin’s Ralph DeNisco.
