Morris, Raupp win a bout in pool competition at Constanta Beach World Series Final in Romania

CONSTANTA, Romania – Two U.S. wrestlers have won a match during the pool competition on day one of the Constanta Beach World Series Final on Saturday.

Both are competing at 70 kg in the men’s division, Jamal Morris of Miami, Fla. and Anthony Raupp of Minot, N.D., each finishing day one with a 1-1 record in the respective pools.

Morris, who is in Pool B, opened with a 3-2 win over Dimitar Angelov of Bulgaria, then lost a 3-2 match to Buluthan Oksuz of Turkey. Morris will face Norbert Molnos of Romania in his final match in Pool B on Sunday. Morris, who won the 2021 U.S. Beach Nationals, was a Div. I wrestler at NC State.

Raupp, who is in Pool A, dropped his first match to Davit Khutsishvili of Georgia, 3-1, but rallied with a 3-1 win over Abdussamed Turgut of the Netherlands in his second match. Raupp will battle Gheorghe Constantin of Romania in pool competition on Sunday morning. Raupp, who competed at Minot State in college, is now a graduate assistant at Minot State.

Three other U.S. wrestlers had bouts on day one in Constanta, two women and another man.

Michael Peters of Quincy, Ill. dropped a pair of bouts at 70 kg in Pool B, 3-0 decisions to Yunus Coskun of Turkey and Quentin Jean-Rene Sticker of France. He will face Norbert Molnos of Romania in his final pool match tomorrow. Peters, who competes for Maryville University, is competing in his third Beach World Series event of the season. He was third in the 2019 Beach World Series final standings.

Breanna Stikkelman of Santee, Calif. lost her only Saturday match in Pool A at 60 kg in women’s action. Stikkelman fell to Anastasiy Kravchenko of Ukraine, 5-0. She will battle Georgia Gkougkoudi of Greece in her pool final match on Sunday. Stikkelman won a Grappling World title and other medals for the USA in Gi and No-Gi Grappling, and has also competed in Belt wrestling for the United States.

Tiaira Scott of Louisville, Ky., dropped a pair of bouts on Saturday, falling 3-0 to Enrica Rinaldi of Italy and 2-2 to Beste Altug of Turkey. Her final pool match on Sunday is against Aikaterini Pitsiava of Greece. Scott competed in college for Campbellsville University, where she was an All-American.

After the pool competition concludes Sunday morning, four athletes will advance to the semifinals at their weight class based upon the pool results. The U.S. athletes remain eligible for advancement to the semifinals, but must win their bouts and score sufficient classification points in their pool matches to qualify.
