Steve Fraser became the first U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman champion at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. In the finals, he defeated Ilie Matei of Romania. However, his toughest match was probably his pool victory over Frank Andersson, a two-time Olympian, three-time World champion and two-time World silver medalist from Sweden.
Perhaps Fraser’s most iconic match was his pool victory over Toni Hannula of Finland. Trailing late, Fraser broke the Finn, earning the victory after he was cautioned out for repeatedly grabbing Fraser’s singlet. By the end of the match, the singlet was in tatters.
