Final Tokyo watch: Russia qualifies nine for Olympics, with Japan and Kazakhstan next with eight

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan – USA Wrestling is keeping a running score of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualification process, as the 2019 World Championships continue in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan this week.

The 2019 World Championships serves as the first qualifying event for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan in the 18 Olympic weight classes. The top six place winners in each of the Olympic weights will qualify their nation for the Olympic Games at that weight.

Sunday was the last day of wrestling, with two Olympic weight classes contested in men’s freestyle: 86 kg/189 lbs. and 97 kg/213.75 lbs.

Russia had the most combined qualifiers of any nation for Tokyo with nine. It included five men’s freestyle, three Greco-Roman and one women’s freestyle berth.

Placing second in the race for Tokyo, based on Nur-Sultan results, was Japan and Kazakhstan with eight.

The United States finalized its four Olympic qualifications, when Kyle Snyder took the bronze at 97kg

Russia had the most men’s freestyle qualifiers with five. Japan had the most women’s freestyle qualifiers with five. Tied with the most Greco-Roman qualifiers, with three, were Germany, Iran, Russia and Uzbekistan.

The next phase of Olympic qualifying comes in 2020, at the continental Olympic qualifying tournaments.
