Tokyo watch for Saturday: Japan leads with eight qualifiers; Russia and Kazakhstan top men’s freestyle with three

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan – USA Wrestling is keeping a running score of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualification process, as the 2019 World Championships continue in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan this week.

The 2019 World Championships serves as the first qualifying event for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan in the 18 Olympic weight classes. The top six place winners in each of the Olympic weights will qualify their nation for the Olympic Games at that weight.

On Saturday, there were two Olympic weight classes completed in men’s freestyle, 74 kg/163 lbs. and 125 kg/275 lbs.

Japan held the lead in overall qualifiers with eight in all styles, followed by Kazakhstan and Russia with seven. Next up were Germany, China and Ukraine with five total qualifiers.

Russia and Kazakhstan had the most in men’s freestyle with three (out of the first four weight classes).

There are 34 nations which have qualified at least one athlete to compete in the Tokyo Games so far.

The United States got its third Olympic berth, when Jordan Burroughs won bronze at 74 kg/163 lbs.

Syria qualified an athlete in men’s freestyle, the first time in decades.

Sunday is the conclusion with the final two men’s freestyle Olympic weight classes, 86 kg and 97 kg.
