Coon, Hafizov, Smith receive draw for day two of Greco-Roman at World Championships

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan – The final three U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers have received their draws for the World Wrestling Championships, and will start their competition on Monday.

2018 World silver medalist Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./New York AC/Michigan RTC) opens his competition against 2106 Asian bronze medalist Lingzhe Meng of China.

Coon received the No. 2 seed in the weight class. If he wins his opener, Coon would face the winner of the preliminary bout between three-time World champion Riza Kayaalp of Turkey and 2017 World bronze medalist Acosta Fernandez of Chile.

Competing in his second Senior World Championships for the United States is Ildar Hafizov (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP), who will open his competition at 60 kg/132 lbs against 2013 Cadet World champion Etienne Kinsinger of Germany.

Hafizov was a 2008 Olympian for Uzbekistan, and competed in two other Senior World Championships for that nation, before emigrating to the United States. His previous World experience for Team USA was in 2017.

Competing at 77 kg/169.5 lbs. is Pat Smith, Minneapolis, Minn. (Minnesota Storm), who has drawn 2019 European silver medalist Roland Schwarz of Germany. Smith’s previous World Championships appearance was in 2015.

Competition begins on Monday at 11:00 a.m. local time, with action through the quarterfinals in these three weight classes. The semifinals at these weights begin at 6:00 p.m. local time. Nur-Sultan is 10 hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern Time Zone.
