After a morning repechage win, Max Nowry (Colorado Springs Co./U.S. Army WCAP) fell in the bronze medal match to 2018 World Champion Eldaniz Azizli of Azerbaijan. Azizli got behind Nowry for a takedown and put together three turns with a tight gut wrench to take the match, 8-0.
Nowry finishes in fifth place at the World Championship with a 2-2 record. He was the first U.S. wrestler to make a medal match at the 2019 World Championships. Nowry, a 2012 University World Champion, has been competing on the Senior circuit for nearly a decade. He was a two-time Junior World Team member in 2009 and 2010 and punched through to make his first Senior World Team this year.
In the tournament, Nowry defeated European Championships bronze medalist Fabian Schmitt of Germany, 10-1, and African Champion Abdelkarim Fergat of Algeria, 11-3. Nowry, while disappointed, had no regrets.
"I don't have any regrets about my performance. There were a couple of slipups. I'm a little upset. I came here to do exactly what I trained to do. I wanted to go out there, make it a fight, score points. I wasn't scared. This was my first time at the Senior Worlds, but I have been to Juniors, been to Universities. I came out to do what I wanted to do and stuck to my game plan. It was a battle," said Nowry.
Also in the first group of wrestlers, Ryan Mango of the USA placed seventh at 63 kg. With Nowry’s fifth place and Mango’s seventh place, the USA earned 18 team points in these weight classes, putting them in 11th place after four weight classes. Russia is in first after the first set of weight classes, followed by Georgia and Kazakhstan.
The semifinals for the second group of wrestlers were held immediately before the finals matches. There were no U.S. athletes still eligible to wrestle after the morning session from this group. Ellis Coleman (67 kg), Joe Rau (87 kg) and G’Angelo Hancock (97 kg) went 1-1 this morning, but were unable to advance to repechage after the opponents who beat them were defeated.
