A team of star wrestlers from the U.S. military programs will compete at the 7th CISM Military World Games in Wuhan, China. The wrestling competition will run from Monday, October 21 through Thursday, October 24. This is a multi-sport event featuring 31 different sports.

Team USA will include 12 athletes, with four athletes in each of the three Olympic events of men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. Men’s freestyle is contested first, followed by women’s freestyle and concluding with Greco-Roman.

The U.S. team is loaded with past Olympians, Senior World Team members and nationally ranked athletes. The U.S. Army WCAP program has 10 athletes on the team, with the U.S. Marine Corps represented by two athletes.

The results from the 2019 Armed Forces Championships, held in El Paso, Texas, were used to help put together the U.S. team.

The U.S. Greco-Roman contingent will feature a pair of past Olympians and World Team members, SGT Ildar Hafizov of the U.S. Army at 60 kg and SGT Ellis Coleman of the U.S. Army at 67 kg. Coleman competed in the 2012 Olympics for the USA, while Hafizov was a 2008 Olympian for Uzbekistan. Coleman has made four U.S. Senior World Teams. Hafizov has been on two U.S. Senior World Teams, and has also competed in two World Championships for Uzbekistan.

Also competing in Greco-Roman are veteran talents Cpt. Daniel Miller of U.S. Marine Corps at 97 kg and 1LT Toby Erickson of the U.S. Army at 130 kg. Both have been Senior National Team members for the USA in Greco-Roman.

All four of the U.S. wrestlers competing at the CISM Games in Greco-Roman were 2019 U.S. Armed Forces champions in Greco-Roman.

Competing in women’s freestyle is five-time Senior World Team member and two-time Pan American Games champion SSG Whitney Conder of the U.S. Army at 50 kg. Also competing is Senior Women’s National Team member SPC Randi Beltz of the U.S. Army at 76 kg.

Rounding out the women’s freestyle team are PFC Areana Villaescusa of the U.S. Army WCAP at 53 kg and PFC Nahiela Magee of the U.S. Army WCAP at 68 kg.

The men’s freestyle team will include SSG Max Nowry of U.S. Army WCAP at 57 kg, who was fifth in the 2019 Senior World Championships and a 2012 University World champion, both in Greco-Roman.

The other three athletes competing in men’s freestyle were successful college wrestlers. 1st Lt. Jamel Johnson of U.S. Marine Corps, who is at 65 kg in Wuhan, competed for UNC-Greensboro. Wrestling at 97 kg is SGT Lucas Sheridan of the U.S. Army, who wrestled for Indiana University. SPC Jacob Mitchell of the U.S. Army WCAP, who wrestles at 125 kg, competed for California Baptist and CSU-Pueblo in college.

All four U.S. wrestlers competing at the CISM Games in men’s freestyle were 2019 U.S. Armed Forces champions in freestyle.
