Massa reaches repechage at Dmitri Korkin International in Yakutsk, Siberia, Russia

YAKUTSK, Russia – Logan Massa (Ann Arbor, Mich./Cliff Keen WC) has reached the repechage rounds at 79 kg/174 lbs. in freestyle wrestling at the Dmitry Korkin International on Saturday.

Massa dropped his opening match to Tazhudin Akayev of Russia, 9-2. Akayev reached the gold-medal finals, pulling Massa back into repechage where he will battle Mirlan Chynybekov of Kyrgyzstan. Should he win that match, he would move to a bronze-medal bout against Alexei Efimov from Russia.

Massa was third in the 2017 NCAA Championships for Michigan.

At 125 kg/75 lbs., Youssif Hemida (Ann Arbor, Mich./Cliff Keen WC) was defeated in his first match, losing to 2019 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix bronze medalist Zelimkhan Khizriev of Russia, 8-4. Hemida was not pulled back into repechage.

Hemida was a 2018 U23 World silver medalist. He was a two-time NCAA All-American for Maryland, who is now training with the Cliff Keen WC in Michigan.

The XII International Grand Prix Freestyle Wrestling Tournament in memory of the USSR Honored Coach Dmitry Korkin is held under the auspices of United World Wrestling (UWW), with Valery Tsylents of Belarus as the technical delegate.

The prize fund will be $ 5,000 for gold, $3,000 for silver, and $1,000 for bronze.

The tournament features 156 wrestlers from 26 countries: Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Armenia, Bulgaria, Belarus, Hungary, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Canada, China, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Cuba, Mongolia, Macedonia, Moldova, USA, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Uzbekistan, the Philippines, South Korea, Japan and Russia.
