TALLINN, Estonia – The Wyoming Seminary girls wrestling team competed against a strong Team Gulf of Finland in women’s freestyle wrestling, a dual meet which helped kick off the annual Tallinn Open weekend.

The Team Gulf of Finland was an All-Star team which featured wrestlers from Russia, Estonia and Finland. The Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School is located in Kingston, Pa., and is supported by USA Wrestling as an accelerated elite girls developmental program.

Team Gulf of Finland secured a 7-3 victory in the featured dual meet against Wyoming Seminary

Claiming wins for Wyoming Seminary were Ava Bayless at 46 kg, Sophia Smith at 57 kg and Vayle-Rae Baker at 54 kg.

Bayless defeated Russia’s Lera Russinova, 9-4, while Baker also defeated a Russian, Vanera Nafikova, 6-3. Smith had a 6-4 win over Estonia’s Maarja Plaser, 9-3

In a Greco-Roman Super Match, Richard Karelson of Estonia scored an 8-0 technical fall over Jacob Kaminski of the USA, who wrestles for Wyoming Seminary’s boys team. It was a rematch of the 2018 Cadet World Championships bronze medal bout, which had been won by Kaminski, 9-1.

This dual meet kicks off the Tallinn Open, a major age-group international event which features action in all three of the Olympic disciplines.

A large group of U.S. athletes will compete in the Tallinn Open this weekend. Greco-Roman action is on Saturday, with men’s and women’s freestyle competing on Sunday.

Wyoming Seminary brought a women’s freestyle team, as well as a few men who will wrestle in the international styles. There is also a large age-group U.S.-based tour team of boys, who will be competing in both styles.
