OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – About a week before the tournament, there are already over 75 ranked wrestlers from the most recent National Girls High School Rankings who are preregistered for the 2019 U.S. Marine Corps Girls Folkstyle Nationals, either in the Junior or 16U divisions.

This major national event will be held at the Cox Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City, March 21-24. The ranked athletes already pre-registered include 61 wrestlers in the Junior division and 16 wrestlers in the 16U division (previously called Cadets).

Included in these early entries are a pair of No. 1 ranked wrestlers, Emily Shilson of Minnesota, who will be wrestling at 106 pounds, and Xochitl Mota-Pettis of Texas, who will be wrestling at 127 pounds. Both are returning champions, after winning Junior titles last year.

Check out the list of nationally ranked girls high school wrestlers already registered at the bottom of this article.

There should be many more nationally ranked high school wrestlers in the field, because the deadline for online registration goes through Wednesday, March 20, closing at 9:00 a.m. CT.

In addition to the Junior and 16U divisions, there are also national folkstyle championships held at the 14U, 12U and 9U divisions. Because of the size of this tournament, the quality of the entries from across the nation and the overall event presentation, this event is respected as the best national Girls Folkstyle tournament in the nation each year.

In order to receive your discounted entry fee, you must register at one of the host motels. This event is a Stay to Play event. Before registering for the tournament, you will need to make a reservation at a host hotel, then ask the hotel for your registration code, this will allow you access to discounted tournament registration.

There is also an opportunity for wrestlers to walk up and register, but at a higher entry fee. Those who pre-register and book at a host hotel pay a $45 entry fee. Those who walk up to register on site and book at a host hotel pay an $85 entry fee. In comparison, if you don’t book at a host hotel, the online entry fee is $85 and the on site registration fee is $120.

All of the weight classes are jammed with talent. So far, the Junior weight class with the most nationally ranked entries is 117 pounds, which has 11 entries from the current rankings. Every Junior weight has ranked athletes, and most 16U weights have some.

Returning Junior champions who are already registered include Shilson and Mota-Pettis, plus Samara Chavez of Texas (entered at 106). Of the 2018 16U champions, those returning to Oklahoma City as either a Junior or at 16U this year include Chavez, along with Lizette Rodriguez of California, Allison Hynes of Oklahoma, Camille Fournier of Texas, Emma Walker of Tennessee, Joanna Qiu of California and Olivia Brown of Oklahoma.

In addition to the 75 nationally ranked athletes, there are dozens more in the field who have had a national ranking in the past and are coming to Oklahoma City to break back into the rankings. Every single weight class has a number of other entries who are on the watch list for the National Girls High School rankings.

One of the reasons that this tournament is one of the main events that influence national rankings is because it offers opportunities for “ranked wins” at a national event. These carry the most weight in the national rankings. Those who are already ranked can improve their ranking with a strong finish and ranked wins. Those who are not ranked can move up into the national rankings with a high placement and some ranked wins.

For girls who would like to wrestle in college, this is a great event to showcase your talent. Coaches from the college wrestling programs come to recruit at this event. As part of the event, the Women's College Wrestling Association (WCWA) will be holding a recruiting fair on Saturday.

This event will be broadcast live by FloWrestling. You can check out the current entries by going to FloArena, finding the Girls Folkstyle Nationals and clicking on the event brackets link.

There is still time for talented and motivated girls to make travel plans and sign up for the 2019 U.S. Marine Corps Girls Folkstyle Nationals. We look forward to seeing you in Oklahoma City next weekend.
