Mapping out where the 2019 National Team members come from

By JD Rader, USA Wrestling | June 24, 2019, 11:58 a.m. (ET)

With both Final X events complete, the 2019 National Team is now set. The National Team consists of the top three athletes at each weight class.

Below is a breakdown of all National Teams by hometown and state. When available, the athlete’s hometown as listed on their college or club roster was used.

60 kg Greco-Roman World Team member Ildar Hafizov, a native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, was excluded from these maps.

California by-in-far leads the overall state race, almost doubling second place Illinois. The bulk of California’s National Team members come from women’s freestyle. The Golden State has 11 athletes on the Women’s Freestyle National Team.

While the number of Women's Freestyle National Team members from California might seem staggering, it’s not as surprising when you consider the age-level success California has had in women’s wrestling. Even without wrestling in 2010 or 2018, since the creation of women’s freestyle Junior National Duals in 2005, California has won seven times.

With 20 states (and two countries) represented, Greco-Roman has the most diverse National Team. Illinois leads the Greco-Roman team race with five National Team members, four of which are on the World Team. Once again, this is not extremely surprising when considering the age-level success Illinois has had in Greco-Roman over the past decade.

While the Men’s Freestyle National Team has members from all over the U.S., it is fairly Mid-Atlantic native heavy. Of the 30 members, 11 come from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or New York, with the rest of the team being more spread out.
