USA wins 19 medals, including nine golds, on day one of U15 World School Combat Games

BUDAPEST, Hungary – The United States secured a haul of 19 medals, including nine gold medals, on the first day of the World School Combat Games on Tuesday, which is serving at the U15 World Championships for United World Wrestling.

Overall, the U.S. medal breakdown was nine golds, six silvers and four bronzes. These 19 medals came in the 20 weight classes contested, a remarkable performance.

Two tournaments were held on Tuesday, with women’s freestyle and men’s freestyle on the mats. The U.S. women’s freestyle team won medals in all 10 weight classes, with six gold, three silver and one bronze. The U.S. men’s freestyle team captured nine medals, including three gold, three silver and three bronze.

Combined, the U.S. wrestlers had a 55-13 record for the day. Although no team scores were kept, the USA was the dominant nation in women’s freestyle and among the top three teams in men’s freestyle. This was the first U15 World tournament recognized by United World Wrestling.

• Women’s FS 66 kg: Destiny Rodriguez (West Linn, Ore./ All-Phase Wrestling Club),
• Men’s FS 38kg: Aden Valencia (Morgan Hill, Calif./ Amateur Wrestling Academy),
• Men’s FS 41kg: Tyler Wells (Princeton, Minn./ PINnacle Wrestling School),
• Men’s FS 52kg: Ethan Stiles (Chicago Ill./ Izzy Style Wrestling)

The coaches for the men’s freestyle team are National Freestyle Developmental Coach Kevin Jackson of Colorado Springs, Colo. and U15 World Team coach Brian Becher of Defiance, Ohio.

Coaching the women’s freestyle team are National Women’s Developmental Coach Jess Medina of Colorado Springs, Colo. and U15 World Team coach Ku’u Robinson of Waianae, Hawaii.

The competition concludes on Wednesday with the Greco-Roman tournament. A pairing story for Greco-Roman will be posted shortly.
