Kennedy Blades wins gold at U17 division, seven Senior wrestlers to fight back for bronze at Lady Klippan Open

KLIPPAN, Sweden – The U17 women’s freestyle competition of the Klippan Lady Open wrapped up on Saturday, while the Senior division got started with 14 Americans competing for Senior medals.

In the U17 division, Kennedy Blades wrapped up a perfect weekend, winning gold at 69 kg.

On Saturday, Blades notched a pair of wins, starting with a 12-6 decision over Cadet World silver medalist Julia Fridlund of Sweden in the semifinals.

In the finals, Blades took on 2017 U15 European champion and 2018 Cadet European runner-up Anastasiia Kozlova of Russia. Blades won the with a decisive 6-3 performance to claim gold.

Three other U17 wrestlers completed their tournaments. Alexandra Szkotnicki and Korina Blades took fourth at 43 kg and 57 kg, respectively, and Grace Pauls finished ninth at 61 kg.

On the Senior side of the tournament, seven Americans will fight back for bronze medals on Sunday.

2017 Cadet World Team member Vayle-Rae Baker dropped a 10-0 bout in the first round at 55 kg to 2017 Cadet World silver medalist Sena Nagamoto from Japan, 10-0. For bronze, Baker will face Marina Simonyan of Russia, who was fifth at the 2018 U23 World Championships.

Lauren Louive will go for bronze at 59 kg, where she will face Morena De Vita of Italy, who has competed at four age-group World Championships. Louive lost her first-round match to 2016 University World bronze medalist Svetlana Lipatova of Russia, 10-0.

Brianna Csontos, a 2018 Junior Pan American champion, suffered a 10-0 loss in the first round at 62 kg against Jessica Brouillette of Canada. Tomorrow, Csontos will face Juan Kang of China in her first repechage match. Kang was sixth at the 2018 China Open.

At 65 kg, USA teammates Julia Salata, a 2018 Final X runner-up, and Kiana Pugh, a 2018 Cadet World Team member, will go head-to-head in repechage. The winner will move onto the bronze-medal match.

Both Salata and Pugh were pinned by 2010 World bronze medalist and two-time Olympian Henna Johansson of Sweden on the front side of the bracket.

Marlynne Deede represented the USA at 72 kg, facing 2012 World champion and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Jenny Fransson of Sweden in the first round. Deede fell 10-0 but was pulled into repechage. On Sunday, Deede will take on 2013 Junior World silver winner Tatiana Kolesnikova of Russia for bronze.

At 76 kg, 2018 Junior World Team member Dymond Guilford, fresh off a 2018 WCWA national title, fell to 2015 Senior World bronze medalist Epp Mae of Estonia, 2-0. Guilford will wrestle back for bronze.
