SOFIA, Bulgaria – Alex Szkotnicki and Lillian Freitas completed their 2019 Cadet World Championships after falling in their respective repechage matches on Thursday morning in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Szkotnicki wrapped up her second World Championships of the year as she won a U15 World gold medal earlier this summer.
Competing at 43 kg, Szkotnicki dropped a dramatic back-and-forth match to Zerda Demir of Turkey in repechage.
Scoring a takedown late in the first period, Szkotnicki trailed only 3-2 at the break. In the second period, the American took over the lead with a takedown. But a late scramble saw Demir put up four points, while Szkotnicki responded with two points. At the end of regulation, it was Demir who had her hand raised in a 7-6 victory.
At 65 kg, Freitas battled two-time Cadet African champion Khadija Jlassi of Tunisa.
Jlassi took a 3-0 lead into the break with a takedown and step out. In the second period, she tacked on another takedown, making the deficit too large for Freitas to overcome. Freitas lost the match 5-1 to end her 2019 Cadet World Championships.
The USA has two women in the finals on Thursday, Cristelle Rodriguez at 49 kg and Skylar Hattendorf at 57 kg. The medal matches begin at 6 p.m. local time (11 a.m. ET) live on Trackwrestling. Follow @USAWrestling on Twitter for updates.
