BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – In addition to this morning’s two gold medal performances from the women’s freestyle team, Cheney Haight added another gold medal for Team USA, winning the 82 kg division in Greco-Roman at the 2019 Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In his finals bout, Haight took on 2018 Senior Pan American bronze medalist Carlos Espinoza Castro from Peru. Haight led 3-0 at the break, scoring on passivity and exposure. Espinoza went on to score the only point in the second period, but it was not enough. Haight took a 3-1 to claim his third overall Pan Am title. He also won golds in 2016 and 2017.

Securing gold medals earlier in the day were Alex Hedrick at 55 kg and Julia Salata at 65 kg.

The U.S. notched two silver medals in the finals session.

2017 Junior World champion Kamal Bey, who had dominated his way to the finals, faced four-time Cerro Pelado medalist Yosvanys Pena Flores of Cuba in the 77 kg Greco-Roman finals.

What seemed like a strangely scored match, Bey fell in a 3-1 battle to Pena Flores.

At 72 kg in women’s freestyle, multiple-time age-group World Team member Rachel Watters went 1-1 on the day to claim silver in her first Pan Am Championships.

Winning bronze on Friday was Patrick Martinez, a three-time Senior World Team member. For third, Martinez dominated Canada’s Phillip Barreiro with a 9-0 tech fall. It marks Martinez’s second Pan Am bronze medal.

Overall, the U.S. Greco-Roman team won nine medals this week, including four gold, four silver and one bronze, and won the team title with 205 points. Second-place Cuba scored 135 points, while Brazil took third with 135 points.

En route to the team title, USA Greco has qualified all six Olympic weights for the 2019 Pan American Games in August.

The competition continues tomorrow with women’s and men’s freestyle at 10 a.m. local time (9 a.m. EST) live on Trackwrestling.com.
