Sarah Hildebrandt named 2018 USA Wrestling Women’s Wrestler of the Year

Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/OTC) was named 2018 Women's Wrestler of the Year by USA Wrestling. It is the first time that Hildebrandt has received this prestigious award.

Hildebrandt won a silver medal at 53 kg at the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. It was her first Senior World Championships appearance.

Seeded No. 1 at the Worlds, based upon her strong international season, she powered her way to the finals. She opened with a 5-1 win over past World medalist Jyldyz Eshimova of Kazakhstan. In the quarterfinals, she won a scrappy battle with Anzhela Dorogan of Azerbaijan, 15-9. Her semifinal victory was a dominant 10-0 technical fall over Diana Mary Weicker of Canada. She was defeated in the finals by 2017 World champion Haruna Okuno of Japan in a bout which was competitive before Okuno scored an 11-0 victory late in the bout.

Hildebrandt qualified for the Senior World Team by winning at Final X in Lehigh in June, defeating 2016 U.S. Olympian Haley Augello in the best-of-three finals series in two straight matches.

She also won the 2018 U.S. Open title in April in Las Vegas, defeating Augello in the championship match, 6-1. It was her first U.S. Open title.

Hildebrandt won the 2018 Pan American Championships gold medal in Peru in May. It was her third career Senior Pan American Championships title.

She also won gold medals at the Grand Prix of Spain in July, and at the Outstanding Ukrainian Memorial in February. She also added a bronze medal at the respected Klippan Lady Open in Sweden in February. In her other international tournament appearance, Hildebrandt was fifth at the Poland Open in September. She also competed on the USA’s Women’s World Cup team in Japan in March.

Hildebrandt has been on the Senior Women’s National Team four times, placing in the top three in her weight class each of those seasons. She competed in the 2016 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, placing 10th at 55 kg. She was also third in the 2015 and 2016 U.S. Open.

She was a two-time WCWA Nationals champion and two-time WCWA runner-up for King University, and a member of King’s WCWA champion team.

Originally from Granger, Ind., Hildebrandt won USA Wrestling national titles and All-American honors on a number of.age-group levels.

Hildebrandt is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete.
