SKOPJE, Macedonia – Kevin Pine of Las Vegas, Nev., topped the podium at the Veteran Freestyle World Championships, wrestling in the D Division at 88 kg in Skopje, Macedonia, on Saturday.

Pine, a seven-time Veteran World medalist, claimed the first World gold of his career after a dominating day.

After a first-round 5-1 win over Azat Sheroyan of Armenia, Pine tallied back-to-back tech falls against Ayhan Ozdemir from Turkey and U.S. teammate Petros Petrosyan to move onto the finals.

For gold, the Vegas wrestler edged out Gyozo Lakatos of Hungary with a 1-0 decision.

“I’ve pictured this moment for quite a few years,” Pine said. “I kept saying all day that I wanted to hear our national anthem played in this arena with me on top of the podium.”

Petrosyan went on to finish fifth in the World at the weight.

In addition to Pine, bringing home a medal for the USA is Stephen Horton of Cibolo, Texas, who finished third at 70 kg in the D Division. It marks Horton’s eighth Veteran World bronze medal.

Up until the semifinals, Horton had not given up a single point to his opponents, recording two tech falls and a 9-0 decision. In the semis, Horton was pinned by Roberto Alvarez of Spain. The American bounced back in the third-place bout, winning a 6-0 match against Benjamin De Wit of South Africa for bronze.
