Six U.S. wrestlers in the hunt for bronze at Poland Open

WARSAW, Poland – Tamyra Mensah-Stock and Brandon Sorenson fell in the Poland Open semifinals on Saturday morning in Warsaw, Poland.

Mensah, a two-time World Team member and Ivan Yarygin champion, faced off against two-time Junior World medalist and 2018 Mediterranean Games runner-up Dalma Caneva of Italy in the 68 kg semifinals. Mensah led 7-0 in the second period before the Italian put Mensah to her back for a pin in 4:14.

Mensah will wrestle for bronze on Sunday.

Sorenson took on Amandyk Bakeyev of Kazakhstan in the 70 kg semifinals in men’s freestyle, where he was stopped short of a comeback bid falling 5-4. Sorenson will wrestle for bronze on Sunday.

In women’s freestyle, Sarah Hildebrandt was pulled back into repechage at 53 kg after losing her first bout to 2015 Junior World champion Nanmi Irie of Japan.

In men’s freestyle, Joe Colon and Cory Clark were also pulled into repechage.

The two U.S. Greco-Roman competitors, Brandon Mueller and Josef Rau, dropped their opening matches today. Rau will battle back for a medal on Sunday as he was pulled into repechage.

The semifinals and finals will be wrestled later today live on Trackwrestling.com. Wrestling for the U.S. in the finals is G’Angelo Hancock in Greco-Roman and Sam Brooks in men’s freestyle.
