BUDAPEST, Hungary - Jacarra Winchester (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC/OTC) placed fifth at 55 kg/121 lbs. in the first set of finals in women’s freestyle at the 2018 World Wrestling Championships at the Papp Laszlo Arena.

Winchester was defeated in her bronze-medal match by Lianna Montero Herrera of Cuba, 5-2. The athletes traded stepouts for a 1-1 tie at the break. Montero scored two second-period takedowns for a 5-1 lead. Winchester was able to secure another stepout but could not close the gap late in the bout.

Competing in her first World Championships, Winchester competed in the first women’s medal match for Team USA at this year’s World Championships.

She won her first two matches of the tournament on Monday, beating Ramona Galambos of Hungary, 12-1 and Tetyana Kit of Ukraine, 4-2. She lost a controversial semifinals match to Zalina Sidakova of Belarus, 2-1, after a winning takedown awarded by the referees was overturned when the Belarus coaches challenged the call.

The other U.S. wrestler in the first group of weight classes, Jenna Burkert (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP), was defeated on Monday and was not eligible for the repechage rounds.

The first two of the 10 women’s weight classes were completed on Tuesday night. Japan won both of the gold medals in the first group, with titles from Mayu Mukaida at 55 kg and Risako Kawai at 59 kg.

The USA has two wrestlers in Wednesday’s gold-medal finals, as three-time World Champion Adeline Gray goes for gold at 76 kg and Tamyra Mensah-Stock goes for bronze at 68 kg.
