SARIGERME-ORTACA, MUGLA, Turkey - Michael Peters of Quincy, Ill. (Road Dawgs WC) was defeated in his final Group B match on Sunday morning, and did not advance to the quarterfinals in the Senior 70 kg weight class at the 2018 Beach World Championships.

His Sunday morning bout was a 4-1 loss to Mehmet Ogut of Turkey. This was his third match in pool play. On Saturday, Peters opened the tournament with a 3-1 loss to Evgheni Volcov of Romania, then bounced back with a 4-0 shutout win over Jose Santana Delgado of Spain.

Volcov and Ogut advanced to the quarterfinals. Volcov was eliminated and Ogut has reached the bronze-medal match.

Under the new rules of the UWW Beach World Series, in which the World Championships are contested, athletes are placed into pools of four competitors, each guaranteed three matches. Winners of each pool, along with the top second place finishers, will advance into the quarterfinals at each weight class, which will then be a bracketed format.

Peters is the only U.S. entry this year. He is a sophomore at Div. II powerhouse Maryville University and competed at Quincy High School in Illinois.

He placed fifth at 70 kg at the 2017 Beach World Championships, which was held in Dalyan, Turkey. He won a gold medal at the 2017 U.S. Beach National Championships in Carolina Beach, N.C., and won a silver medal at the 2018 Beach National Championships, also held in Carolina Beach.

Donnie Peters, who is Michael’s father and an NCEP bronze certified coach, is coaching Michael during the competition.

Sarigerme-Ortaca is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone. A live stream is being provided by United World Wrestling.

The 2018 World Championships competition is a qualifying event for the 2019 World Beach Games in San Diego, Calif., October 9-14.

Rusty Davidson of the United States is the head official of the Beach World Championships. Davidson also serves on USA Wrestling’s Ad-Hoc Associated Styles Committee.
