PERM, Russia – Two U.S. wrestlers competed on Friday at the Veterans World Greco-Roman Championships, both falling short of the medal rounds.

Competing at 78 kg in Div. B (41-45 years old), Rudy James of St. Paul, Minn. won his first match, a 4-3 victory over Vasilli Staroverov of Russia. In the quarterfinals, James was defeated 8-0 by Pavel Kurilenko of Russia. When Kurilenko was defeated in the semifinals, James was not eligible for the repechage. James placed seventh in the standings.

Last weekend, James won a silver medal at the Veterans World Freestyle Championships, held in Skopje, Macedonia.

Also competing on Friday at 88 kg in Div. E (56-60 years old) was Constantin Tintea of New Britain, Pa., who wrestled a pair of Pool B matches and placed fifth. Both were close losses, to Alexander Kurnosov of Russia, 1-1 and Michael Bulgrin of Germany, 5-4. Only the top two athletes from each three-athlete pool were able to advance to the semifinals, which put Tintea out of medal contention.

One USA athlete will compete on Saturday, Stephen Horton of Cibolo, Texas, who competes at 70 kg in Div. D (51-55 years old). He opens up agazint Amar Akli of France.

Last weekend, Horton won a bronze medal at the Veterans World Freestyle Championships in Skopje.

In UWW international events, Veterans are 35 years old through 60 years old, and compete in five different age divisions.

The Team Leader/Coach is two-time Veterans World Greco-Roman champion Chris Brown of Maryland, who is also a member of USA Wrestling’s Associated Styles Committee.
