USA wins nine of 10 golds in men’s freestyle at Pan American Cadet Championships and wins team title

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – The United States totally dominated the men’s freestyle competition at the Pan American Cadet Championships on Sunday, winning nine of the 10 gold medals and claiming a silver in the other weight class.

The USA had an amazing 38-1 record during the day, with 22 technical falls and nine pins.

The U.S. gold medalists were Stevo Poulin of New York (45 kg), Sheldon Seymour of Pennsylvania (48 kg), Paxton Creese of Minnesota (51 kg), Hunter Lewis of Wisconsin (55 kg), Beau Bartlett of Pennsylvania (60 kg), Carson Manville of Virginia (65 kg), Aaron Gandara of Arizona (71 kg), Gerrit Nijenhuis of Pennsylvania (80 kg) and Santos Cantu of Oregon (92 kg).

In the gold medal finals, Creese, Gandara and Cantu scored pins, and claiming technical falls were Poulin, Bartlett, Manville and Nijenhuis.

Claiming a silver medal with a 3-1 record in his round robin was Chase Thompson of Florida at 110 kg.

In the team standings, the USA won the title handily, scoring 245 points, more than double of second place Mexico with 120 points. Taking third was Canada with 100 points.

These were the same 10 wrestlers who competed in Greco-Roman for Team USA on Friday, and also won 10 medals with five golds.

Four U.S. wrestlers were “double champions,” winning gold medals in both freestyle and Greco-Roman: Sheldon Seymour at 48 kg, Hunter Lewis at 55 kg, Carson Manville at 65 kg and Gerrit Nijenhuis at 80 kg.

The USA had a great weeked at the Pan American Cadet Championships, winning 29 medals in 30 weight classes in the three disciplines. Included in the medal haul for Team USA were 20 gold medals.

This was also a qualifying event for the Youth Olympic Games. Updates on the U.S. participation at the Youth Olympic Games will be announced when available.
