USA Wrestling announced the four athletes who will compete in wrestling for Team USA at the Summer Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018, pending approval by the United States Olympic Committee. The Youth Olympic Games will be held Oct. 6-18, with the wrestling competition to take place Oct. 12-14 in Argentina.

Wrestling is one of 32 sports which will be featured at the Youth Olympic Games, an elite, multi-sport event for athletes between the ages of 15-18 that is organized by the International Olympic Committee and held every four years. This is only the third Summer Youth Olympic Games, and competing in this event is a major honor.

Representing Team USA in women’s freestyle are Emily Shilson of Maple Grove, Minn. at 43 kg/94.5 lbs; and Tiare Ikei of Honolulu, Hawaii at 49 kg/108 lbs. The U.S. athletes in men’s freestyle wrestling are Robert Howard of Cranford, N.J. at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Carson Manville of Kingston, Pa. at 65 kg/143 lbs.

The U.S. wrestling team will be coached by Sam Barber of Colorado Springs, Colo., who is currently the head wrestling coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He enters his fifth season as head coach for Air Force, and was an assistant coach there for the five previous years. Barber is a former Manager of Coaches Education for USA Wrestling. He has been a head coach for Augsburg College (Minn.) and Upper Iowa University (Iowa). Barber has coached numerous international teams for USA Wrestling, including Cadet and Junior Pan American teams.

Also attending as an official IOC Athlete Role Model is USA Wrestling Assistant Women’s National Coach Clarissa Chun of Colorado Springs, Colo. Chun was a 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in women’s freestyle wrestling and a 2008 World champion. She is one of 54 athletes selected by the IOC to serve as Athlete Role Models to the nearly 4,000 athletes who will compete at Youth Olympic Games.

Nations are limited in the number of athletes per discipline that can enter the Youth Olympic Games and the nation must qualify athletes through continental Youth Olympic Games qualifiers to compete. USA Wrestling has a USOC -approved Athlete Selection Procedure for its YOG athletes, which includes specific performance standards and was confirmed by a USA Wrestling Youth Olympic Games Selection Committee.

USA Wrestling did not qualify any wrestlers in the Greco-Roman discipline and was able to have four total wrestlers on its Youth Olympic Games delegation. USA Wrestling was required to notify United World Wrestling and the USOC of the selections by June 15.

Wrestlers at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games are from the UWW Cadet age division (ages 15-17 years old). There will be 15 total wrestling weight classes in the 2018 Games, five in each of the three Olympic disciplines.

All four of the U.S. wrestlers at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games have not only represented the United States at an age-group World Championships, but two of them have won World medals. Complete biographies are below.
