Martinez, Coon now No. 1, Michigan up to No. 5 in biggest turnover in Trackwrestling Div. I rankings

By Trackwrestling | Feb. 13, 2018, 6:46 p.m. (ET)
It might have been the wildest weekend yet of the college wrestling season. At the very least, it was the biggest week of turnover at the top of the Trackwrestling Division I rankings presented by Resilite.

Two returning NCAA champions suffered losses. Two more unbeatens and another returning NCAA finalist stumbled.

Two-time national champion Isaiah Martinez of Illinois returned to the top of the 165-pound rankings after Iowa freshman Alex Marinelli toppled returning NCAA champ and previously unbeaten Vincenzo Joseph of Penn State. Marinelli surged up to No. 2 in this week’s rankings, one spot ahead of Joseph.

Michigan’s Adam Coon handed three-time World and Olympic champion Kyle Snyder of Ohio State his first collegiate loss in nearly three years on Sunday and supplanted Snyder as the top-ranked heavyweight. The Wolverines knocked off two other higher-ranked Buckeyes earlier in the night, getting victories from Stevan Micic over then-No. 2 and formerly unbeaten Luke Pletcher at 133 and a last-second win from Myles Amine over returning national finalist Bo Jordan at 174.

Penn State capped its 28-13 win against Iowa with heavyweight Nick Nevills’ 3-2 victory against previously unbeaten and then-No. 3 Sam Stoll.

After all the individual dominoes fell, the Nittany Lions remained on top in the team race with a 117.5 projected NCAA advancement and placement points. Ohio State is second with 109, followed by Iowa (80), Missouri (75) and Michigan (73.5), which climbed to fifth.

North Carolina State (61), Lehigh (57), Oklahoma State (45.5) and Virginia Tech (39) held onto spots inside the top 10, while Arizona State (38.5) returned to the No. 10 spot.

The Trackwrestling team rankings are based off the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25.

The rankings are compiled by David Mirikitani.
