YORK, Pa.  – The 2017 Cadet Greco-Roman National Duals championship match came down to the day’s final bout as Minnesota Storm squeezed by with a 40-38 win over Illinois for its second-consecutive Cadet Greco National Duals title.

The dual started at 113 pounds with an Illinois technical fall win from Noah Surtin. Minnesota jumped out to a quick 21-6 lead, winning the next five matches, which included falls from Tyler Shackle in 1:46 at 132 pounds and Colby Njos in 5:25 at 138 pounds.

Other bonus-point wins for the Storm in that streak were tech falls tallied by Ryan Sokol and Carson Manville at 120 and 126 pounds, respectively.

The two teams traded wins in the next three bouts, with Minnesota Storm picking up a tech fall from Cade King at 160 pounds and its third fall of the day from Dalton Andrist at 170 pounds.

But at 182 pounds, Trevor Swier swung the momentum in favor of Illinois to start a six-bout win streak.

Swier notched an impressive 12-2 tech fall over Minnesota Storm’s Grant Parrish with the help of two big four-pointers to end the match in 1:47. Illinois teammate Peter Christensen followed with a quick 10-0 tech fall that lasted just over a minute at 195 pounds.

Feeding off the dominant energy, Jacob Kaminski stuck his Minnesota Storm opponent in 2:55 at 220 pounds before heavyweight Luke Luffman of Illinois notched a 12-2 win for four team points.

Another three team points came from Tommy Curran of Illinois at 88 pounds, who trailed 3-0 to Blake West after the first period. He went on to score 10 points in the second for a 10-8 decision, thanks to a four-point throw just seconds before the final buzzer. To cap off the streak, Brody Norman took out Kanin Hable in a 12-1 match at 96 pounds.

Although Minnesota Storm answered with a tech fall at 100 pounds from Paxton Creese, Illinois had cut Minnesota Storm’s lead to 39-34 going into the final match.

With the national title coming down to the last match, Matthew Ramos of Illinois took on Joey Thompson of the Storm.  Ramos led 6-4 at the break, before scoring nine unanswered points in the second period for a 16-5 tech fall for Illinois. However, it was not enough and Minnesota Storm took the dual 40-38.

Illinois won more matches on the day, capturing nine of the dual’s 17 bouts, but Minnesota’s dominance with three falls and four tech falls was enough to defend its title as the best Cadet Greco team in the nation.

Pennsylvania Red secured a third-place finish with a dominant win over Iowa Gold, 58-18. Fifth place went to Ohio, a 41-35 winner over Washington, and Oklahoma beat Michigan Red to take seventh.

The freestyle tournament starts on Friday with the championship finals set for Saturday. All of the Cadet National Duals action is broadcast live on Trackcast.
