LIMA, Peru – The U.S. women picked up right where the Greco-Roman team left off yesterday by hauling in four medals at the Junior Pan American Championships held at the Villa Deportiva Nacional Videna in Lima, Peru.

Americans Jayden Laurent (Denmark, Wis.) and Emma Bruntil (Acme, Wash.) climbed to the top of the podium with both women posting 4-0 marks on the day.

Laurent topped a loaded 67 kg/147 lbs. weight class that was determined in a five-athlete round-robin style bracket. The Wisconsin native began her day with a first-period pin over 2016 Senior Pan American runner-up Yudari Sanchez Rodriguez of Cuba. She continued with two technical fall victories and a win-by-forfeit to grab the gold medal.

“I just feel like I came out there and left it all out there, pushed through every period, just let it all out there,” Laurent said. “My upper body stuff was going for me. I shot a couple times, but it didn’t work so well, so I just stuck to the upper body and it went well.”

Bruntil also navigated a five-athlete round robin to claim the 59 kg/130 lbs. gold medal. After opening with an 11-0 technical fall over Abnelis Yambo Miranda of Puerto Rico, Bruntil notched three-straight pins, including a 44-second fall over defending champion Tianna Kennett of Canada, to secure the win.

“I had a lot of confidence going in, so I felt pretty good with everything I did, but I still have room to improve in certain areas. I was able to get some pins and tech’s, so I was pretty happy with it,” Bruntil said.

Charlie Hamer (The Colony, Texas) and Gladdys Palma (Ashland, Ore.) battled back from semifinal losses to earn bronze medals for the U.S. Hamer picked up the 44 kg/97 lbs. bronze with a first-period fall over Hillary Carrera Odar of Peru. Palma took out Panama’s Emily Sanchez Ortega 12-2 in the 63 kg/138 lbs. bronze medal match.

Two-time Cadet World Team member Vayle-Rae Baker (Benton, Pa.) and Wayland Baptist star Jathiya Isaac (Plainview, Texas) both wound up on the losing end of a bronze medal match. Baker went 0-2 in her efforts at 51 kg/112 lbs. and Isaac posted a 1-2 record at 55 kg/121 lbs.

It was a tough day for Andrea Sennett (Wheeling, Ill.) at 72 kg/158 lbs. as she went 0-3 in a four-athlete round-robin bracket.

Kateri Rowell (Aberdeen, Wash.) dropped her only match of the day at 48 kg/105 lbs. to Ecuador’s two-time Junior Pan American medalist Lady Moran Valenzuela, 10-0.

The Junior Pan American Championships conclude on Sunday with the men’s freestyle competition set to begin at 11 a.m. (ET). Medal matches are schedule to begin at 6 p.m. (ET).
