Quarterfinals set in USMC Junior Greco-Roman Nationals as four returning champions advance in Fargo

FARGO, N.D. – All four returning Junior National Greco-Roman champions advanced to the quarterfinal round with dominant performances at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Greco-Roman Nationals at the Fargodome on Thursday.

Returning champion Brendan Garcia of Colorado (106) won his only match of the day at 106, scoring a 10-0 technical fall over Boira Mokmoeun of Washington. He will draw Blake Fredrickson of California in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Also seeking a second straight title is Tommy Brackett of Tennessee (182), who opened with three technical falls, beating Jonah Peterson of Illinois, 11-0, Aiden Henry of California, 14-1 and Holt Truax of Minnesota, 11-0. He battles Myles Wilson of Colorado in the quarterfinals.

Haydn Maley of Oregon (220) is seeking to repeat, and powered through his bracket with an 11-0 technical fall over Armando Fuentes of California, a pin over Benjamin Smith of Ohio in 1:41 and a 12-0 technical fall over Keaton Fogler of Illinois. He will battle Max Darrah of Missouri in the quarters.

Returning champion Brandon Metz of North Dakota powered through his three bouts at 285 pounds. He started with a technical fall over Connor White-shrum of Washington, 11-0, pinned Timothy Mandyck of Minnesota in 38 seconds then stopped Alec Moore of Ohio 9-0. He will battle Zach Muller of Illinois in the quarterfinals

The Junior Triple Crown quest of Anthony Cassioppi of Illinois continued at 285 pounds after three wins on Friday. Cassioppi won the first two legs of the Triple Crown with folkstyle and freestyle Junior National titles already in his trophy case. He will face Austin Emerson of Michigan in the quarterfinals.

All four of the returning Junior Greco-Roman runners-up have advanced: Brenden Chaoanapibool of Washington (106), Austin Macias of Illinois (126), Dalton Young of Washington (132) and Max Wohlabaugh of Florida (170).

Five 2017 Junior National freestyle champions who entered in Greco-Roman were also unbeaten: Cassioppi, plus Samuel Latona of Alabama (106), Patrick McKee of Minnesota (120), Anthony Artalona of Florida (152) and Jacob Warner of Illinois (195).

Also moving into the quarters were a pair of UWW 2017 Junior Nationals champions, Young plus Tyler Dow of Wisconsin (160). Four 2017 UWW Cadet Nationals champions will compete in the quarterfinals: Parker Decker of Texas (100), Anthony Molton of Illinois (130), Ridge Lovett of Utah (120) and Mason Phillips of Washington (138).

The quarterfinal round begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. All of the action is live on Flowrestling.
