FARGO, N.D. – Three returning Cadet National champions remain unbeaten and have advanced to Sunday’s quarterfinals after the first day of freestyle at the U.S. Marine Corps Cadet National at the FargoDome on Saturday. Cadets are 15-16 years old. Sunday’s quarterfinal round has been set in all of the weight classes.

Returning Cadet National double champion Braxton Amos of West Virginia (195) had three straight technical falls on Saturday, putting away Colby Beer of Kansas, Jason Edwards of Alaska and Julian Stone of Oregon. His quarterfinals matchup is Erich Osteen of California. Amos competed for Team Ohio last year.

Returning Cadet National freestyle champion Cullen Schriever of Iowa, competing at 106 this year, won four times, with technical falls over Frankie Chapman of North Dakota, CJ Composto of New Jersey and Preston Decker of Texas, plus a third-round win over Caleb Henson of Georgia, 10-4. He draws Jakason Burks of Nebraska in the quarterfinals.

2016 Cadet Greco-Roman champion Dylan Ragusin of Illinois won his first three matches by technical fall, stopping Cody Minor of Wisconsin, Daniel Tolin of Indiana and Riley Bettich of Michigan. His quarterfinal opponent is Dustin Norris of Ohio.

There were 1,153 Cadet freestyle wrestlers representing 45 states in the competition, an increase of 29 athletes from last year’s event, a nice start to this year’s event.

Team Illinois, which has won the last four Cadet National freestyle team titles and is also the 2017 Cadet Nationals Duals freestyle champion, is in a strong position to defend its title, pushing 18 athletes into the quarterfinal round, eight more than the next team, Ohio, with 10. Next is Pennsylvania with nine, Minnesota with eight and Iowa with seven.

There are three 2016 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman runners-up still unbeaten and advancing to the quarterfinals, Reece Witcraft of Oklahoma (120), Carter Tuttle of Pennsylvania (132) and Abe Assad of Illinois (170)

One of the 2016 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman runners-up, Brenden Chaowanapibool of Washington, was beaten in the second round at 100 pounds by Kaleb Thompson of Illinois, in a 14-13 shootout. He was eliminated in the consolation round by Korbin Shepard of Missouri and will not earn a medal this year.

Considered the deepest weight class in the field with three past Cadet National finalists, with Chaowanapibool out of the tournament, the 100 pound class still features Greco-Roman champion Ragusin plus 2016 Cadet National Greco-Roman runner-up Andrew Chambral of Michigan. Also still in the draw is Paxton Creese of Minnesota, who was third in the Cadet Nationals in Greco-Roman last year, plus was a freestyle All-American.

The quarterfinals are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, in a session alongside the Junior Nationals freestyle tournament which kicks off in the morning. All of the action is being broadcast LIVE by Flowrestling. Results can be seen as they happen on FloArena.
